Cheap energy prices could be imminent and homeowners who decide not to immediately switch energy supplier for British Gas could be rewarded.
The energy supplier recently announced plans to cut its gas prices by ten per cent from the middle of February which could prompt many consumers to switch gas supplier. However, industry competitors are forecast to implement their own reductions soon.
British Gas has been criticised for not introducing a more dramatic price cut, but its rivals could be offering bigger savings in the near future.
Mark Todd, of energyhelpline.com, said: "Expect a flurry of cuts up to 20 per cent from the main rivals - Scottish & Southern, npower, EDF, E.On and Scottish Power - in the next fortnight."
He added that while British Gas would be able to say it was the first to introduce reductions, better cheap energy deals could well be available soon.
More than five million households across the UK are thought to have been pushed into fuel poverty as a result of the lack of cheap energy.
