National Grid requires 'huge amount of work' - 03/08/2011

Homeowners searching for cheap electricity deals and considering using an energy comparison site might agree that the National Grid requires "a huge amount of work" to be at its most efficient.

This is the view of Rob Norris, press officer at Renewable UK, who pointed out that an upgrade of the grid is necessary if we are to make the most of renewable energy generated by onshore and offshore wind turbines.

"Long-term, there's a huge issue around how you then connect up the power grid to the European grid - there are some connections at the moment, but we could make much more of it," he explained.

"Eventually we could have the European super grid, which would enable us to export all of the excess electricity we're generating offshore to other countries around Europe and perhaps even beyond, to Africa and so on."

Mr Norris' comments came after the European Wind Energy Association found that the UK installed the highest number of wind farms of any country in the world, having build 101 turbines between January and June 2011.
