3 February 2012: Winter weather is here: is your heating system up to scratch?

Homeowners in the UK are being warned to ensure their heating systems are fully prepared for further plummeting temperatures in the coming weeks.

The drop in temperatures means that your boiler will be working harder to heat your home to a comfortable level. The extra strain on your boiler, as it is working more frequently and harder to produce heat could lead to problems if it hasn’t been properly maintained.

Problems such as broken-down boilers can lead to great discomfort and leave homeowners without hot water and heating. With temperatures across much of the UK hitting sub-zero levels and forecasts suggesting that February will be considerably colder than average, it is important to take steps to protect your home from potential problems.

Make sure you have your boiler regularly serviced and be aware of where the stop valve on the water supply is located. As the weather continues to get colder, people are also warned to make sure that exposed pipes are insulated, to prevent them from freezing.

We compare boiler cover, central heating cover and entire home emergency policies to help you find the right one for your home. Most of the policies come with an included annual service for your boiler as part of the fee.
