People who are looking to switch gas provider may find investing in heat cover is a good idea, as the current cold snap could lead to a rise in boiler breakdowns.
This is the warning of Direct Line, which stated homes with condensing boilers that have uninsulated external drain pipes are most at risk.
As it has become a legal requirement since 2007 for all new gas boilers to be condensing, millions of homes could be in danger of falling victim to this problem, the organisation stated.
Frozen pipes prevent waste liquid from escaping, Direct Line explained, which leads to it backing up and cutting out the boiler.
Martin Egan, national property claims manager at Direct Line home insurance, said: "The problem can be resolved by effective insulation of the pipe, which homeowners can do themselves and save having to call an engineer out."
Recently, it was claimed by E.ON that 42 per cent of households have experienced issues with their central heating during the winter months.
