With the news that cheap gas customers have been hit hard by two energy suppliers' price hikes, it is becoming apparent that energy market reforms are necessary.
Scotland's first minister Alex Salmond said energy secretary Chris Huhne's raft of reforms will help Scotland realise its ambitions for further renewable energy generation and noted that without large-scale changes, energy bills are likely to rise by 25 per cent in the coming decades.
However, Mr Salmond made it clear that the Scottish government remains opposed to nuclear energy "because every pound spent subsidising this expensive and unpredictable technology of the last century is one pound less available for investment in future growth of renewable generation".
"We remain committed to maintaining Scotland's position as 'destination of choice' for investment in the development, deployment and generation of clean energy," he added.
Scotland is hoping to become a European powerhouse for green energy generation in the next few years.
