British farmers could play key role in cheap energy production - 05/01/2009
The National Farmers' Union (NFU) has decided that British agriculture is in a good position to become a provider of cheap energy through a recent EU green ruling, reports Hexham Courant.
The Renewable Energy Directive requires EU member states to be satisfying 20 per cent of their national energy requirements through renewable means by 2020. The NFU believes that by escalating the production of sustainable biomass on farmland across the UK, British agriculture will be in an excellent position to help the UK reach that goal in order to both reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide cheap energy.
Peter Kendall, president of the NFU, told the paper: "[The directive] will put in place long-term market signals for renewables in Europe as well as opening up enormous new market potential for farmers in the UK."
Mr Kendall added that the development was the first of its kind in the world and was a real chance for British farmers to play a key role in determining the energy future of the UK.
