Consumers could switch energy payment methods for cheaper bills - 04/09/2009
Homeowners looking to compare energy payment methods could save nearly £225 a year by opting to pay their bills on the internet, a new study suggests.
Figures reported by the Daily Telegraph show that cheaper energy prices are available for customers who opt to pay their gas and electricity bills on the internet and the potential savings have increased over the past few months, reports the Telegraph.
Industry regulator Ofgem estimates around 1.3 million Britons pay their bills online, while nearly 14 million people still pay using cheques or cash.
Audrey Gallacher, an energy expert at watchdog Consumer Focus, told the paper: "The energy companies are wooing new customers with cheaper online tariffs at the expense of the one in three energy users who are unable to access the internet."
She added that older people are at a particular disadvantage as they are more likely to be suffering from fuel poverty, but are less likely to have an internet connection to access cheap energy prices.
Consumers have the option of switching energy companies to access the best market rates.
