Physics funding cuts could affect consumer ability to compare energy sources - 01/12/2009
The ability of consumers to switch energy sources could suffer a setback if budgets are reduced in university physics departments across the UK.
Reductions in nuclear physics research funding could have an impact on the UK's ability to develop nuclear power stations and help consumers to access cheap energy and tackle nationwide carbon emissions.
A recent report from the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) warned that the scale of nuclear research in the UK is already insufficient for any plans to escalate its nuclear redevelopment plan.
Professor Jim Al-Khalili, a physicist at the University of Surrey, told the Guardian: "We are worried that the STFC doesn't realise even minor cuts in nuclear physics could kill the subject in Britain at a time when we are embarking on a new nuclear power programme."
The government recently announced details of ten UK sites that it considers suitable for new nuclear development in the coming years.
