British Gas are set to install smart meters in up to one million homes this year.
The move is part of an ambitious plan to cut household energy bills by at least £1 billion over the next ten years and create 2,500 jobs, reports the Times.
British Gas said it will start to install the meters before the end of a government trial to enable British households to benefit from cheap energy and lower bills as soon as possible.
The smart meters are designed to monitor energy consumption and send the information directly to energy suppliers over wireless networks.
A monitor located within the home simultaneously shows customers exactly how much energy they are using, which makes it easier for them to compare energy providers and switch to cheaper alternatives.
Ian Peters, chief operating officer at British Gas, told the Times: "This will transform our relationship with our customers.
"Instead of merely sending them a bill, we will be able to advise them on energy efficiency methods and how to cut their usage."
