Householders wanting to compare energy could be surprised to learn that the organisers of next year's Olympics are hoping to run a green event.
The head of sustainability, David Stubbs, has told BusinessGreen that those running the Games will hire and reuse materials in order to reduce carbon emissions.
It comes after the organising committee commissioned a report that found 'embodied carbon' accounts for over half of the 400,000 tonne carbon footprint of staging the event.
"We found the biggest part of the footprint of the games is embodied carbon, and it was not just in the materials used in the stadia, but also in the so-called overlay - the temporary extra seating, cabling, IT, signage and so on that goes with any sporting event," Mr Stubbs explained.
"We want the footprint to be as low as possible ... one way is to hire materials and facilities and always look at what can be done with them after the games."
The Olympics are set to kick off in London next summer, followed by the Paralympic Games.
