Many more people may look to switch energy provider to a company that can offer electricity from green sources this year, as renewables are set for solid growth.
This is according to Maria McCaffery, chief executive of RenewableUK, who said 2011 was a "momentous year" for the sector as the amount of power generated from renewable energy grew.
One of the latest firms to announce its involvement in the area is Serco, which will develop systems to allow the development of up to four gigawatts of electricity - enough to power two million homes.
Speaking at the RenewableUK Health and Safety 2012 conference in Manchester, Ms McCaffery stated the country is "on the cusp of a low carbon revolution" that will establish the UK as a world leader in wind, wave and tidal technology.
"It is fair to say that we have cemented our position in the energy arena and we are no longer an alternative energy," she said, noting renewable sources are now a mainstream option moving into 2012.
