People living in Cardiff face higher gas and electricity bills than consumers in the rest of the UK, new figures have shown.
The Department of Energy and Climate Change found that households in the Welsh capital pay an average of £428 and £645 a year through direct debit on electricity and gas bills respectively.
Meanwhile, customers with prepayment meters spend, on average, £459 on electricity and £716 on gas each year.
Leeds and Manchester have the cheapest energy bills in the UK, the report also found. According to the government, this difference is due to variations in network costs.
Liz Withers, head of policy at Consumer Focus Wales, said: "In recent years we have seen big spikes in the cost of heating homes during the winter months, and the devastating impact that can have on household budgets."
She warned that with five out of the Big Six energy suppliers announcing price rises of between 10 and 20 per cent, a further 90,000 households in Wales will be living in fuel poverty this winter.
