Housing groups awarded £4m green investment - 21/11/2011

The government has announced the winners of a £4 million fund to provide green heating systems to social housing tenants in order to help residents get cheap gas and electricity prices.

A total of 24 organisations around the country had their applications for a share of the investment approved and are the first bodies to benefit from the new Renewable Heat Incentive programme.

Energy and climate change minister Greg Barker said he was pleased so many groups will share the money, which will assist people who may be struggling to pay their gas and electricity bills.

"It will encourage an increase in the number of new heating technologies in social housing and help people deal with expensive fuel costs," he added.

Recently, director-general of Saga Dr Ros Altmann stated more must be done to help vulnerable elderly individuals this winter, as the UK's housing stock is generally very poor for energy efficiency.
