Cheap energy from marine technology welcomed - 30/09/2009

Plans to invest more in the development of cheap energy from marine technology have been welcomed by the Renewable Energy Association (REA).

The Marine Renewable Proving Fund has been launched by the government to support the development of commercial-scale marine renewables applications across the UK.

"These funds will help the UK capitalise on its current status as world leader in marine renewable technology," said Steph Merry, the REA's head of marine.

People planning to switch energy supplier in search of a more eco-friendly provider could also welcome the fund, as it aims to increase access to renewable energy sources in the UK.

She added: "It is vital that the UK maintains this current lead and the government needs to give investors positive signals in order to build confidence in the sector and to support UK manufacturing and jobs."

Meanwhile, energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband has announced the launch of a new competition designed to encourage local communities to do more to access cheap energy.

The minister has launched the low carbon communities scheme in order to get local communities to cut their energy emissions, with measures such as improved insulation also having the benefit of reducing energy costs.
