Energy efficient appliances 'help reduce bills from energy suppliers' - 03/03/2010
An expert has encouraged homeowners to replace non energy efficient appliances with more economical ones in order to reduce bills from energy suppliers.
Climate change expert Chris Goodall said new household appliances tend to be significantly more energy-efficient than older models, so homeowners could reduce their bills considerably by investing in a newer model.
Writing in the Guardian, he noted that the biggest improvement has comes in fridges and fridge-freezers, which now tend to have much better insulation and motors that consume less power from energy suppliers.
"Any fridge-freezer over about 12 years old may well be worth replacing with a new A++ model," Mr Goodall said, "although the financial payback will not be rapid."
He advised consumers to go for appliances that provide over 300 litres of cold storage and use less than about 300 kilowatt hours of electricity a year, which could save between £35 and £40 compared to an old fridge-freezer.
According to the Energy Saving Trust, domestic appliances account for 47 per cent of total domestic electricity bills.
