Individuals living in Liverpool, north Wales and southern Scotland are typically paying around £75 more a year than for their cheap electricity and gas than those living in the south-east.
Research from moneysupermarket found the price for energy suppliers to transport gas and electricity is more expensive in some parts of the UK than others, so the costs are being passed onto customers.
Householders who switch energy could therefore be better off, especially as the incumbent provider, or the energy company that automatically supplies a property with gas and electricity, rarely offers a competitive deal.
Indeed, homeowners who have not decided to switch gas and electricity provider in the last 12 months are unlikely to be on anything other than the energy firm's standard tariff, whereas they could be better off on another deal.
Scott Byrom of the research website noted that 40 per cent of a household's annual energy consumption is used over the winter.
"Everyone needs to ensure they are on the best tariff for their region and usage, and shouldn't be lulled into thinking they will automatically get the cheapest deal if living in a providers' core area," he added.
