Ofgem launches investigation into ScottishPower price claim - 22/06/2011
One of the Big Six energy suppliers has been warned by Ofgem that it could have made a "potentially misleading" promotional offer.
ScottishPower will be investigated after the watchdog raised concerns over its £459 savings claim made on the Direct October 2012 package, which was put forward during its price hike announcement.
The energy supplier said it was increasing gas prices by an average of 19 per cent and electricity rates by ten per cent from August 1st.
Alistair Buchanan, chief executive of Ofgem, told the BBC that the tariff offer in question was being made the subject of an investigation because the company said prices were guaranteed to remain a minimum of one per cent per year below its standard monthly direct debit gas and electricity rates.
"We have been looking at their marketing material in particular, and under our consumer protection powers we are very concerned about some of the claims they have made and so we will be having a look at that very carefully," he said, adding that this does not mean ScottishPower has breached its obligations.
