Interior designer Danielle Proud noted fitting adequate insulation is one way to make a home more environmentally-friendly, which will also have the effect of reducing the amount spent on fuel.
People may be able to get assistance with this under the government's Green Deal policy from the autumn, which energy minister Greg Barker recently said offers a "fantastic opportunity" to transform the UK's housing stock.
Ms Proud also suggested replacing light fittings with LED devices, as there is a much wider choice available than in the past.
"Now that it is a legal requirement in building regulations you get much nicer colours. It is not all that horrible stark, glowing white," she noted.
These devices can offer a warm glow, so individuals do not have to downgrade the aesthetics of their abode in order to save money on energy, the expert continued.
