Energy supplier calls for increased 'fluency' in nuclear redevelopment - 06/01/2009
Major energy supplier EDF has said that the UK energy industry must be more "fluent" if nuclear redevelopment is to produce new reactors within a decade, reports ft.com.
The French-owned utility has completed a £12.5 billion takeover of nuclear provider British Energy (BE) and is planning to redevelop the UK's nuclear infrastructure in order to safeguard Britain's energy future. However, the energy supplier's chief executive said that the UK would need to develop a more accommodating regulatory framework if the new reactors were to operate effectively.
Pierre Gadonneix, EDF chief executive, told the website: "If we want to meet the 2017 challenge for the first EPR (European pressurised reactor) we must find ways to make the process as fluent as possible. That will take time and that will cost."
Finland is host to the first EPR to be constructed outside France but the development has run into problems owing to differences between French and Finnish regulatory requirements.
