Business throughout the UK could tackle the impact of high prices from energy suppliers by adopting more efficient practices, according to government figures.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has referred to research from waste reduction organisation Wrap revealing nearly half of UK businesses are aware savings exceeding £100,000 are available by reducing their energy consumption, while methods to achieve this can be cheap or even free of charge.
In addition, making a real effort to adopt these changes could help lower the national carbon footprint by ten per cent, according to the figures.
Hilary Benn, the environment secretary, said: "There are opportunities here in the UK too in the low carbon and environmental goods and services, where we currently have just over three per cent of the global market."
Businesses can take action by making sure electrical equipment is switched off when not in use and they could also consider installing microgeneration equipment like solar panels and wind turbines.
