A business energy account holder in Blackburn has been handed a huge bill after the firm's energy suppliers fitted the wrong electricity meter.
According to the Lancashire Telegraph, Rippleheads Ice Creams has been told by EON that it owes £60,000 for its cheap electricity bill, despite the fact that the business has never missed a payment.
Owner Catherine Elliot told the newspaper that the energy supplier agreed to drop the outstanding balance to £37,000, then to £30,000, but is now insisting that the money must be paid back in full or in instalments.
"Clearly this sort of bill could send us out of business. How on earth can they expect us to pay?" she commented.
"EON have been reading our meter for the past ten years every three or four months and we always get a normal quarterly bill of around £400.
"We have another unit next door so we never thought there was anything wrong because the bills were similar at the two premises."
Ms Elliot told the BBC that she is preparing to take legal action.
