Council plans drive to cut energy bills - 29/03/2012
Business energy clients looking to go green and get cheap electricity may take inspiration from one local authority that is seeking to reduce unnecessary usage.
Worcester News reported the county council in the area is considering options to reduce the £2 million it spends on street lighting, such as dimming bulbs, changing to LEDs or switching items off altogether, either after midnight or permanently.
There are 52,000 installations across the county, as well as 8,000 illuminated road signs, which between them account for 21 per cent of the council's carbon emissions.
Councillor Ken Pollack said the issue needs to be closely scrutinised, considering issues such as how energy suppliers set charges for electricity and the opinions of local people.
Any decision should be taken based on the needs of individual communities, he continued.
Elsewhere, Ilkeston Hospital in Derbyshire is also looking to reduce the amount it spends on lighting by installing photovoltaic solar panels, which should generate all the power needed to keep the facility illuminated, BusinessGreen reports.
