Speaking at a conference for E.ON vendors, Paul Golby, the firm's chief executive, said there were a number of ways its partners could improve efficiency.
The company's supply chain director Chris Lovatt told industry news source Supply Management that reducing costs is vital to securing future energy supplies and offering cheap electricity.
He said: "We want to challenge our suppliers and for them to challenge back, to help us identify and make changes to our operations."
Taking a proactive approach would ensure savings can be made with no adverse effects on suppliers, the environment or customers, added Mr Lovatt.
Earlier this week saw E.ON launch its new Winter Gas Guarantee, offering homeowners lower fuel prices throughout the winter months.
