Energy supplier insists coal station shutdowns will not bring blackouts - 02/01/2009

Energy supplier E.On has insisted that coal power station shutdowns scheduled for within the next few years will not bring blackouts to the UK, reports kentnews.co.uk.

The Sunday Times recently reported that several coal power stations in the UK were working at such high capacities that they would be forced to close earlier than expected due to a lack of environmental efficiency. The fear was that these early closures could bring blackouts as the UK's nuclear redevelopment might not yet be ready. E.On claims that Kingsnorth and other coal stations in question may soon reduce their operating rates and that blackout fears are unfounded.

With reference to Kingsnorth, a spokeswoman for the energy supplier told kentnews.co.uk: "It's too early to predict when it will close. It just depends what the market is doing at any given time."

She added that existing nuclear power stations that were being fixed would soon resume operations, while other coal stations would be up and running when emissions-reducing technology was fitted.
