Council starts search for renewable energy contractor - 03/02/2011

A local authority in Lancashire is set to generate its own cheap electricity via new solar panels.

Halton Borough Council has started the search for a company that can fit photovoltaic panels to a number of its buildings, the Construction Index reports.

The council wants the first phase of panel installations to be complete by the end of March 2012 and is looking for a contractor to maintain the devices for 25 years.

Meanwhile, energy supplier British Gas has teamed up with the National Housing Federation to launch a 'rent-a-roof' offer for solar panel installations.

The scheme allows housing associations to reduce tenants' energy bills by at least £100 and cut carbon emissions by renting the panels from British Gas.

The energy company then fits the panels at its own cost and maintains them for 25 years.

It offers associations a share of the resulting feed-in tariff, which will come to at least £30 per property per year.

Switching to a green energy tariff can slash your CO2 footprint by two tonnes and also save you £100s a year! Click here to compare green energy tariffs.
