Reduce bureaucracy of cheap energy schemes, says MP - 17/05/2011
Schemes to help deliver cheap energy bills to those on low incomes should be made simpler and involve less bureaucracy, an MP has argued.
Julian Sturdy, Conservative representative of York Outer, told the York Press that initiatives such as the government's Warm Front payment scheme take too long to sort out.
Speaking of one of his constituents, who had to wait over a year to have their broken boiler replaced, Mr Sturdy said: "The paperwork was burdensome and the inefficiency and bureaucracy of the system beggared belief at times.
"Spending on the Warm Front scheme and its predecessors has totalled £2.6 billion between 2000 and 2011, yet at a national level too many homes, particularly in vulnerable communities, remain poorly heated and insulated," he added.
Meanwhile, it may be a good idea for householders to compare domestic energy deals ahead of possible price hikes this winter, as has been warned by British Gas parent company Centrica.
