Energy suppliers should end all forms of cold-calling doorstep sales because the marketing strategy does not offer the best cheap energy deals to consumers.
This is the view taken by Consumer Focus, which is calling on energy providers to cease the sales method.
"Cold-call doorstep sales have been a continuous problem since the competitive energy market was introduced," said Audrey Gallacher, director of energy at the consumer protection group.
"Suppliers have an appalling track record on mis-selling and have failed to offer their best deals face-to-face, leaving a huge number of customers switching to a worse deal."
It comes after Scottish and Southern Energy last week announced it would be suspending its doorstepping techniques with immediate effect, a move that was welcomed by Consumer Focus.
The organisation is now calling on energy suppliers to adopt voluntary measures to improve service for customers, including putting a stop to uninitiated sales calls and sales talks during smart meter installation.
