New centre to provide research on renewable energy - 02/09/2011

Customers searching for cheap energy deals might benefit in coming years from a research centre designed to boost the offshore renewable energy sector.

Feted to be built in the Humber area, the Technology and Innovation Centre would create 10,000 jobs and offer world-class research on green electricity generation, the Hull Daily Mail reported.

David Wells, business development manager at the University of Hull, told the newspaper that an expression of interest has been submitted to the government's technology strategy board, which, if successful, will see the developers take part in a workshop in October.

"There is some strong competition, but we have a good chance given our location and the green industry growing up round the Humber," he noted.

"We have the round three offshore wind farm sites and things are already happening here."

Meanwhile, business secretary Vince Cable has announced £6.5 million worth of funding to go towards training the next generation's green energy sector engineers.
