Miliband promises better energy deal - 28/09/2011

Labour leader Ed Miliband has stated that gas and electricity prices will be subject to "upward pressure" over time, meaning millions of householders might want to switch energy tariffs to get a cheaper deal.

Speaking at the party conference yesterday (September 27th), Mr Miliband said the government must challenge "irresponsible, predatory practices wherever we find them".

He remarked: "We need investment in energy here in Britain, but our energy companies have defied the laws of gravity for too long. Prices go up but they never seem to come down."

The opposition leader said this makes it all the more important to get the best possible deal for customers, adding that consumers should wake up to the reality of a "rigged market".

Mr Miliband also called for the break up of the dominance of the Big Six energy suppliers and said that by going unchallenged, the set up of the market is allowing customers to be ripped off.
