Companies in need of business energy tariffs have been urged to "engage" on the topic of becoming more green.
Paul Edwards, chair of the British Council for Offices' Environmental Sustainability Group, said the easiest thing for firms to do is to measure their cheap energy usage.
"Once you do that you realise, 'Actually, why am I doing that? Why am I paying all that money? Why am I leaving the lights on overnight? Why is the air conditioning running all night and day?'," he pointed out.
"If you start to measure first, then you can understand what you are actually using."
Mr Edwards noted that businesses can also turn their attention to reducing waste and the amount of paper used in their offices as part of their green improvement drive.
His comments come after the UK Green Building Council and the British Property Federation announced a number of key property sector figures have called on the government to honour its energy efficiency ratings commitments.
