UK 'on track' to meet carbon targets - 02/12/2011

Business energy clients looking to use renewable power sources may be pleased to hear the UK is said to be on course to meet its carbon reduction goals.

This is according to energy and climate change secretary Chris Huhne, who said progress in the area is important if the UK is to reduce its dependence on imported fuel, which is subject to price volatility and leads to higher carbon output.

Announcing the new Carbon Plan, which details ways in which the country can achieve its aim of cutting emissions by 50 per cent by 2020, he said: "Our national economic interest is to be found in a cost-effective transition to low carbon, to an economy that is more resilient, innovative and efficient."

Proposals set out in the document include cutting the carbon footprint of buildings in the country and adopting a combination of renewables, nuclear power and greener use of fossil fuels.

Commenting on the plan, head of energy and climate change at the Confederation of British Industry Dr Matthew Brown welcomed an increased focus on efficiency, noting businesses will benefit from a framework to achieve this without hitting competitiveness.
