DECC: Cheap energy green economy failing to materialise - 01/06/2009
Homeowners may be switching energy companies in pursuit of cheaper bills, but according to a report the government says the UK is falling behind in green targets.
Britain is committed to generating 15 per cent of its energy demand from renewable means by 2020, but the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has said the UK is on course to achieve just five per cent, reports the Times.
At the moment, only two per cent of Britain's national energy demand is generated through renewable means, making the UK among Europe's worst users of green power and the Conservatives have labelled the government's environmental policies a failure.
Greg Clarke, the shadow energy minister, told the paper: "For the past ten years we have lacked a credible and comprehensive energy policy. Labour's piecemeal approach is clearly not working."
A spokeswoman for the DECC told the paper that the government will be unveiling new policies designed to reach the target and existing plans are not being relied upon.
The government recently announced plans to insulate every home in Britain within the coming years.
