Record cash payouts due for pensioners on the Age Concern Energy Services tariff could help them access cheap energy more effectively.
Cash payments totalling £22.88 will be paid to 200,000 gas customers, with more than £4 million being issued altogether in response to the biting winter months experienced earlier this year.
Age Concern's tariff is run in partnership with major energy company E.On and offers some of the best prices for the UK's pensioners, with residents in regions such as Lancashire, Birmingham and Nottinghamshire set to receive the highest payments.
Mike Abrey-Bugg, product development manager for Age Concern Energy Services, said: "Our additional Cold Weather Payment is equivalent to an extra three hours use of a gas fire and is paid to our gas customers aged 60 and over."
Many homeowners were forced to keep their heating turned on over the winter months when temperatures plummeted and the UK had the heaviest snowfall in years.
Energy companies have been heavily criticised for only reducing prices in the spring.
