Homeowners keen to switch energy to cleaner sources may be pleased to hear that E.On has delayed plans to construct a new coal-fired power station.
Plans to build the station at Kingsnorth in Kent were partly a response to fears that an energy gap could result from several older coal power stations being decommissioned a number of years before planned nuclear redevelopment is completed.
The plans have been the subject of intense criticism from environmental campaigners, but the firm said the delay is in response to reduced electricity demand in the UK.
A spokesman for E.On said: "As a group, we remain committed to the development of cleaner coal and carbon capture and storage (CCS), which we believe have a key role to play alongside renewables, gas and nuclear, in tackling the global threat of climate change."
Andy Atkins, executive director of environmental group Friends of the Earth, said the government should ensure new coal power stations are all fitted with CCS technology.
New nuclear reactors are scheduled to become operational in 2017, potentially encouraging more consumers to compare energy providers.
