London waste could help people switch energy for cheaper source - 02/11/2009

Homeowners in London looking to compare energy prices might be interested by news that the city's waste could provide low-cost heating and electricity.

Figures from the London Assembly Environment Committee revealed the city produces 22 million tonnes every year and this could heat 625,000 homes and provide cheap energy for two million properties.

Environmental group Friends of the Earth praised the findings, saying it was good to be considering methods of waste disposal that do not involve using landfill.

Jenny Bates, London campaigner for Friends of the Earth, said: "We welcome plans to expand anaerobic digestion in the capital as this creates truly green energy from food waste."

According to figures from Friends of the Earth, the UK wastes around £650 million every year by failing to recycle waste.

Research from the London Assembly Environment Committee reveals London produces enough waste every year to fill Canary Wharf Tower once every eight days, but using anaerobic digestion could help prevent the release of 1.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.
