Solar panels allow more Welsh schools to switch energy sources - 05/11/2009

Local homeowners could be inspired to compare energy sources and switch suppliers with news that two more Welsh schools are to be provided with solar panels.

Radnor Valley County Primary School, in New Radnor, Powys and Lewis Girls' School in Ystrad Mynach, near Caerphilly, are to have solar panels worth £20,000 installed as a result of funding from the government Low Carbon Building Programme and The Co-operative, reports the Western Mail.

The panels installed at Radnor Valley County Primary School could save two tonnes of carbon dioxide and generate enough electricity to power a computer for 33,000 hours.

Caryl Lewis, headteacher at Lewis Girls' School, told the paper: "On a daily basis you can measure how much energy is being generated. Particularly in the science department, where the measurement panels are based, it gives a real boost to the teaching of sustainability."

Wind turbines can also be used to generate clean electricity, although onshore projects tend to be unpopular as they can have a detrimental impact on local landscapes.
