Energy suppliers RWE npower have called for an industry-wide agreement over investment in Britain's ageing energy infrastructure.
RWE npower chief executive Volker Beckers said energy suppliers need to work together with the government and customers to improve the industry, according to Reuters.
Speaking at the Future of Utilities conference this week, he said: "I'm calling for an energy contract in the UK market; a tripartite agreement between government, industry and customers to meet the goal of acceptable, available and affordable energy."
He added that the industry needs to agree about the right market signals up front to deliver investments at the scale required and the government must push forth a low-carbon agenda and work actively with the industry to create a workable framework.
A comprehensive agreement would help boost Britain's electricity generation capacity, which is set to fall markedly over the next few years.
Maria McCaffrey, chief executive of RenewableUK, recently called on the government to invest more in the sustainable energy sector to help roll out renewable energy projects across the country.
