Consumers urged to install cheap energy efficient measures - 25/03/2010

Consumers have been advised to compare energy efficient measures in order to improve their energy usage.

Home eco expert Tim Pullen said householders should consider installing solar panels to improve their sustainability and reduce energy bills.

Speaking at the Homebuilding and Renovating Show at the Birmingham NEC, he pointed out that solar panels are able to provide energy without doing much work for 25 years.

The government's feed-in tariffs, which come into force on April 1st 2010, are likely to encourage homeowners to think about the benefits of adopting solar panels, Mr Pullen claimed.

"They are generating tariffs for each kW collected, irrespective of what you use it as," he said.

"You can use it to boil the kettle, you can put it onto the grid, you can dig a hole and bury it - you will still get that amount of money."

From next month, householders and communities that install low-carbon electricity technology such as solar photovoltaic panels and wind turbines will be paid for the electricity they generate.
