There are several quick and easy techniques homeowners can adopt to reduce the amount of gas and electricity they consume from energy suppliers, according to Sustain.
The social enterprise pointed out that one of these methods is insulation, which is a cost-effective way of reducing bills and improving a property's energy efficiency.
Other small behavioural changes such as only boiling the required amount of water when making a cup of tea can also lower energy usage, Sustain said.
Gordon Miller, sustainability and communications director of the organisation, explained that householders can reap the financial benefits of their cheap energy efficiency plans in just a year, saving a couple of hundred pounds.
"When you step up to the bigger stuff like insulation and so on, it does cost a bit more, but it is not a huge amount of money - it costs only a couple of hundred pounds," he said.
Those from vulnerable households on benefits or income support can obtain a 50 per cent discount off the cost of insulation or switch gas suppliers to benefit from cheaper tariffs.
