Ratings 'could promote cheap energy efficiency' - 18/08/2010

An expert has welcomed new home energy ratings as a positive development in promoting cheap energy efficiency.

Gordon Miller, sustainability and communications director at Sustain, said the ratings system will provide clear information to homebuyers and give them an idea of the efficiency of a property before they commit to buying it.

He pointed out that although the cost of a property and its location will be decisive factors for most homebuyers, the ratings systems will encourage them to pay greater attention to sustainable cheap energy issues.

"People are becoming more aware of the benefits of energy efficiency," Mr Miller said. "In my opinion, the public is definitely switching on to it more."

He added, however, that the energy ratings system may be a good thing for buyers but it may not necessarily be seen as having a positive impact for sellers, who view the system as a bigger burden.
