Government 'should invest more in green energy' - 28/10/2010

The government should take further steps to invest in renewable domestic energy supplies, it has been claimed.

John Barwise, chairman of the Cumbria Green Business Forum, said that while some investment is being made, more is needed if the K wishes to become a leader in the renewables sector.

The current level of funding will help up to a point, but there is not enough for the development of the market or infrastructure, he said.

He argued that while the government is supporting the development of industry, steps should be taken to improve the supply of relevant parts, rather than allowing foreign countries to control the manufacture of renewable technologies, he said.

His comments follow the government announcement that £200 million will be invested to help the development of offshore wind technology.

Mr Barwise argued that this is a multi-billion pound industry and that more funds are needed for effective market development.
