UK 'will see surge in wind power' within next decade - 03/03/2011

Cheap electricity customers could be receiving a large proportion of their energy from wind power within the next ten years, according to the National Grid.

Commercial director Alison Kay, speaking at the London Power Summit 2011, said a surge in wind power can be expected within the coming decade, edie.net reported.

Ms Kay commented: "At National Grid we believe the biggest change in renewable power will be a huge growth in wind generation.

"We believe wind power in the UK will rise to 20 per cent, in some places up to 30 GW of power by 2020," she explained.

However, the UK will require "something radical" so that its cheap energy market can cope with the intermittent nature of wind farming.

National Grid will also need some £20 billion worth of investment to aid the changeover to a low carbon economy, the news source noted.

Meanwhile, the Cumbria Green Business Forum has called on the government to clarify its position on Britain's renewable future in order to persuade more businesses to invest in it.
