Expert offers tips on switching energy deals - 05/05/2011

With oil prices currently being affected by major world events, consumers might wish to compare energy deals now to see if they can find a cheaper way to run their home.

The Lancashire Evening Post reported that energy suppliers could raise their standard tariffs this summer following increases to wholesale oil prices as a result of the political turmoil in the Middle East and the natural disasters in Japan.

Money saving expert Martin Lewis told the newspaper that the average household is currently paying £1,100 a year for their cheap gas and electricity supplies, although this could go down to around £900 a year if they switch energy tariffs to an online one.

"The only thing that's changed is the customer service and billing. That's why doing a comparison is so important," he said.

Users could be with the energy supplier that offers the cheapest deal but still be on the most expensive tariff on offer, the expert noted.
