Edinburgh to host pioneering marine energy centre - 01/06/2011

Householders requiring cheap energy in Edinburgh might be pleased to hear that their city is set to host a pioneering marine energy test centre.

The research base is said to be the most sophisticated wave facility "that has ever existed" by Professor Ian Bryden, chief scientist of the project.

"There's nothing like it in the world," he told the Scotsman.

"We are expecting it to be used by international teams, not just academics but industry. We see it having academic research and industrial applications, including the oil industry."

The £9.3 million wave tank based at Newington will be fitted with computerised flaps that can replicate different wave conditions, so researchers will be able to study how best to generate cheap electricity from Britain's coastlines.

News of the development plans comes after the Scottish National Party announced that Scotland is aiming to become 100 per cent self-sufficient in green electricity generation by 2020.
