Cheap energy users hoping to save money on their household bills could take a leaf out of a local authority's book and install solar panels on their homes.
Stoke-on-Trent City Council went ahead with plans to fit panels on its Civic Centre and these have generated enough green electricity in one month to power the average home for a whole year.
Lord Mayor Denver Tolley commented: "The solar panels are working really well, and are already showing an excellent return. The most pleasing aspect is that the energy they are producing is completely green, so as well as saving money, they are also saving the environment - it is a win-win situation."
He noted that the run of sunshine and good weather has boosted the amount of power generated.
Domestic energy users who are considering installing small-scale energy generating equipment in their own homes might be able to take advantage of the government's feed-in tariff scheme.
