Energy efficiency 'can reduce bills' - 08/07/2011

Making a home more energy efficient is one way householders can secure cheap gas and cheap electricity bills.

Louise Burfitt-Dons, campaign director at the Global Warming Alliance, noted that fitting double glazing and investing in draught excluders for holes in skirting boards are two ways people can conserve energy and reduce utility bills.

"There's still a huge amount of energy lost through the average house that hasn't been built in the last few years," she pointed out.

"It's really more older style properties that lose an awful lot of energy through old fashion windows, through cracks in the floorboards [and] through insufficient curtains."

Ms Burfitt-Dons explained that homeowners living in rural areas will have to spend more money on heating their properties than urban dwellers, as living in a city is warmer.

In this case, rural householders might be inclined to compare energy deals and switch gas tariffs if they find a cheaper option.
