Heat-absorbing material could cut energy use by 35% - 04/08/2011
Householders wanting to switch energy to find cheap gas deals might be intrigued to learn about a new material that can regulate temperatures inside buildings.
The novel non-deformed energy storage phase change material (PCM) was developed by researchers at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China and can retain and release heat as required when installed inside a room.
It can be manufactured in a number of different shapes and sizes, and can even be used as a stray to be applied to walls, roofs and wallpaper to save up to 35 per cent of energy in a property.
Its creators believe the material can be used to cut carbon emissions around the world, particularly in the construction sector.
Professor Jo Darkwa, director of the Centre for Sustainable Energy Technologies, commented: "The construction industry produces more carbon emissions than any other industry in the world - even more than aviation.
"This material, if widely used, could make a major impact in the world's efforts to reduce carbon emissions."
