Cheap gas customers who are tempted to compare energy prices might be able to keep an eye on their energy usage with a smart meter.
Energy supplier British Gas has just started rolling out the devices to its customers and plans to install them in ten million households.
"It can very quickly be used to deliver brilliant insight to the consumer to say 'you don't have enough insulation in your home', or 'your central heating system is costing you a fortune'," Dean Keeling, managing director of British Gas Smart Homes, explained.
"It helps us deliver insight to the consumer which they can trust, and we know is accurate. Ultimately for us that helps us build a better business."
The meters can display information about the amount of cost of energy a home is using and can even provide a breakdown of how much individual appliances consume.
Based on the information displayed, consumers might be encouraged to switch to other energy suppliers to see if they can get cheaper bills.
