SSE to boost investment in renewables - 01/12/2011
Individuals looking to go green by comparing renewable electricity tariffs may be interested to hear one energy supplier is to increase its investment in wind power.
Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) has announced a new sustainable energy fund aimed at developments in Scotland that could be worth £90 million over the next 25 years.
Chief executive of SSE Ian Marchant said: "SSE's wind farms are already bringing a range of community benefits in addition to generating clean, renewable energy."
He added "the time has come" for the firm to do even more to offer these advantages to the people of Scotland.
The funding will support community wind farm projects such as the Strathy North development, worth £9.5 million - half of which is to be ring-fenced for the community hosting the facility.
Earlier this week, prime minister David Cameron stated wind power offers great potential for boosting the renewable energy sector in the UK and helping drive its low-carbon economy.
