Scottish govt's energy scheme criticised - 01/12/2011

The Scottish government has been criticised by energy suppliers for the complexity of its assistance schemes, while a representative of one firm has also said it is easier than people think to find cheap electricity and gas tariffs.

Speaking to the Scottish Parliament's Energy Committee, director of Scottish Power Rupert Steele described the options offered by the authority as "bewildering".

He added the choices of tariffs available to consumers looking to switch energy deals is a lot less confusing than many people have been led to believe.

"You start off with a very basic choice. Most of the companies in the industry, I think, have a fixed, or one or two fixed offers. They will have a variable offer," he explained.

Differences in prices are usually down to factors such as payment methods, regional variations and discounts such as reduced overnight power costs for households that have electric heating, Mr Steele continued.

Recently British Gas announced it will look to restore consumer confidence by simplifying its tariffs to offer a straightforward choice between a foxed-rate and variable deal.
